Conditions · Low back pain

Low back pain that keeps coming back.

Most back pain settles within weeks. When it lasts months, returns with sitting or bending, or travels into a leg, a disc or nerve may be involved. That is what the evaluation looks at.

What it can feel like

I did the research before A deep ache across the low back, often worse after sitting or first thing in the morning. Sharp pain with bending or lifting. Sometimes pain, tingling or heaviness into the buttock or leg.

How Dr. Lee assesses it

Your history, a physical exam with a muscle and nerve function assessment, and a look at your MRI or X-rays, to see whether a disc or nerve is behind the pain.

“At the ending session now, my lower back tension is no longer an issue.”
Dr. Lee carefully assessed my spinal X-rays before beginning. Over time I decided to commit to a 30-meeting program, meeting 2 or sometimes 3 times per week with attention first to prepping my back for spinal decompression. I appreciated that during each session Dr. Lee checked in with me about my neck and back.

Questions about low back pain

When it has lasted more than a few weeks, keeps coming back, or travels into a leg. New numbness or weakness in a leg is a reason to come in sooner.

Sitting puts more load on the discs of the low back than standing or walking. When a disc is involved, long drives and desk days often make the ache worse, and getting up from the chair can be the hardest part.

Yes. A disc can be the source of a deep ache in the low back even when nothing travels into the leg. The exam and your MRI or X-rays help show whether a disc is behind it. When the pain does run down the leg, see sciatica.

It starts with Dr. Lee’s evaluation at the Bethesda office. If a disc is behind your pain, she may recommend non-surgical decompression as part of a program built for you. If it is not, she tells you and suggests what to do instead.
